Old

This is me, more than 40 years ago pushing a pram.

Pushing a pram, c1969

Today, like most days, I was pushing a pram. This time with my own child in it.

It's a cliche I know but where the bloody hell did those 40-something years go? I only feel, ooh let's say, 25.

I don't feel old enough to be responsible for the welfare of three children who look to me for guidance, support, comfort and food. I may creak a bit more; I may need glasses to read small print; I may need anti-wrinkle cream; I may need caffeine in the mornings. But I don't feel as old as I am.

Is this normal? At what point do you feel your age (perhaps with the exception of immediately after my workout today)? Should I have done more, achieved more, seen more by now? Is that why I don't believe I can possibly be 40-something? Should I be more successful, with a more expensive handbag and shoes? Maybe.

Should I be happy that my children are thriving? Should I be grateful everyday for the love of my husband? Should I go out there and grab life with both hands and enjoy the ride? Should I stop worrying about my age?

Yes.

  1. Oh I relate to this. I don't think you ever feel your age. My 85 year old aunt told me she stil felt 15, she was still a great flirt!

  2. I soooooo understand what you are saying here as I think it a LOT like almost every day. Gets me down a bit actually. I don't feel my age and in fact I often cannot believe I am as old as I am I mean when I was n my late teens I considered people my age to be old!! Growing old does not feel me with joy but sadly it is inevitable isn't it?
I love the pram in the photo btw x x

  4. I am 38 and that is pretty much how old I feel and look. I find that being 38 is much better than I thought it would be when I was 30 or 21. I had a huge panic about turning 30 but now I am approaching 40 I am feeling much more content. I don't feel the need to look back and reminisce about a golden age in my life that never existed. I love my life now.

  5. Great picture. I don't feel grown up enough to have three children either. I keep thinking someone is going to collar me soon and send me back to school.

  6. I know exactly what you mean Alison. I feel about 30 despite my 40+ years too. If it helps you look a good ten years younger in the flesh! ; X

  8. Fabulous picture! I had a conversation with my (still incredibly active) Grandfather last year. At the age of 91 he still can't fathom where the years have gone, and he said he feels so much younger. It happens to us all I guess! :D

  11. Fabulous photo. Life has an uncanny way of repeating itself over and over hasn't it. The words of the song are so true, it is a circle of life - so yes, we definitely should stop worrying about our age and just grab life and enjoy!

  15. The key thing is - can you still turn forward rolls? So long as it's yes, the years are immaterial (in my case its a no!).
