Capture the Norfolk Colour

We spent the last week of the school holidays in Norfolk, land of big skies, Cromer crabs and some of the countries loveliest beaches. In the same week I was tagged by BavarianSojourn to join in with 'Capture the Colour', with the colours being red, green, white, yellow and blue. This was originally a competition held by TravelSupermarket.com which is now closed (!) but you can still go and see the stunning travel photography of the winners.

I love that little bundle of red huddled up against the unseasonal chilly wind.

Red on sheringham beach

Why the variations in colour and texture of seaweed surprise me I do not know but this lime green variety caught my eye on Cromer beach.

Lime green seaweed

After a hard days crabbing there is nothing like a glass of chilled white sauvignon blanc to help you unwind.

white wine

I am astonished at how many months of child benefit I would have to save to be able to afford a beach hut so in the meantime I will aspire to a bright yellow one, just like this.

beach huts

And given Norfolk is the land of big skies I had to include one of the sky. I was very lucky to see a big blue sky, and how fortunate that The Wee One was wearing blue on that day too.

I'm certain that you have got some colourful shots from the summer holidays, so why not join in and stretch out your summer holidays with photo memories.

My Difficult Dozen

Never in the history of memes has one so difficult or complicated been pointed in my direction but always up for a challenge and a bit of nosey-parkeriness I am armed with 12 facts, 12 answers for BlueBirdSunshine and Mum Of One, and my very own 12 questions.

My dirty dozen
  1. I have one dog called Misty Moo who was once top of the pile but has been gradually nudged done a few pegs with the arrival of small people. She does still get space on the sofa though so life ain't all bad.
  2. I have a date with two lovely twittery folks in a weeks time and I am super excited. Mostly because it is a lunch date so I can be a lady who lunches :)
  3. There are three small people vying for my attention constantly so it is a marvel that any blogging ever gets done. Be greatful people.
  4. I have size four feet. Sometimes 3 1/2. Small. It's a wonder I can balance on them.
  5. In my head I have a fantasy five star lifestyle that one day will come true
  6. I have picked the six winning euro millions numbers for tonights winning draw (see point 5)
  7. Seven sleeps till my lunch date.
  8. I have only eight nails worthy of a manicure for my lunch next saurday.
  9. I have nine books on my bedside table all screaming read me and I can't choose.
  10. My little Princess can count in tens. Genius child.
  11. 'Eleven' only ever rhymes with 'heaven' in kids songs.
  12. Twelve pounds to loose before Britmums and the going is tough.
In answer to  Mum of One
  1. Favourite book? - I loved Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger but Tracey Chevalier's Girl With The Pearl Earring tops the list.
  2. First famous crush? *hides behind cushion and whispers* David Essex.
  3. Worst film ever watched? I watched The History of Violence on holiday last week. That was up there.
  4. Red or white? Red.
  5. Chicken or fish? Chick chick chick chick chicken.
  6. Still or sparkling? Sparkles are a girls best friend.
  7. Favourite post written by you? Crikey, er, this one about the perfect family afternoon on the beach.
  8. Favourite post read in the last week? Even more crikey-ish. This one from Flossing The Cat.

  11. Your best joke? Knock Knock. Who's there? Whoo. Whoo Who? Don't get over excited, it's only a joke.
  12. Mahahaha…..you are done! Tease!

In answer to Blue Bird Sunshine
  1. What’s your favourite cheese? Boursin - garlicy goodness on a cracker.
  2. Where in Europe would you go, or have you been lucky enough to have been, on a romantic weekend getaway? Before children there was Dublin and Amsterdam both of which were pretty darn marvellous and I'd go back in a heartbeat.
  3. Do you have a beauty regime, if so what is it? Depends what you call a regime really. Does a quick wave of a wipe and smear of moisturiser count?
  4. What song would you do at karaoke? I have never ever done karaoke and nor will I. Ever. Believe me, it is for the best.
  5. Name something you dread doing. Any form of housework.
  6. Post your favourite photo, of anything, from any time. You are joking right? A favourite picture? All levels of crikeyness!
  7. If you suddenly had an extra hour in the day today, what would you do with it? Take more photos.
  8. What’s your favourite family tradition? Sleeping. We do it very well in our family and we all like it. A lot.
  9. Do you believe in ghosts or spirits? Not first hand experience but I have had a couple of close encounters which leave me suspiciously convinced.
  10. If you could choose anyone at all to write a guest post on your blog, who would it be? It would have to be a woman, with a sense of humour of which there are so many to choose from. Jenny Eclair based on this quote, "If I was unemployed I would spend my dole money on a cleaner." Woman who understands me.
  11. What are your top three girls and top three boys names? Do you have any idea how many baby name books I read to come up with just 2 boys names? And you want my three favourite? All I can say is that my favourite names are celtic sounding but spelt in a sensible way!

I am supposed to tag 12 more bloggers to do this meme but there aren't 12 alive who haven't already done it I don't think. If I am wrong and you haven't done it and fancy answering my questions then please feel free. Let me know in the comments so I can pop along to check out your answers.

Remember 12 facts about you, 12 answers to my questions and 12 questions of your own to pass on to 12 more bloggers! Couldn't be easier.

My First...

... meme about first things!

I was tagged by Just Above Average Mum for this list of ‘firsts’. Hers were very inspiring and made me smile so go and take a look.

My first boyfriend
Not strictly a boyfriend because I think the love was very much one way and I don't even remember getting kissed, but Peter Collins, age 6ish, was the love of my life in Year 2 and I even scratched his name on my wooden pencil case.

First person you kissed
David, in the bus shelter, raining, age 15. Not quite the magical experience I was expecting.

First job
Oh the glamour of that green gingham polyester uniform as I sat at the grocery check out every Saturday. I interviewed at the same time as my friend for a Saturday job in Debenhams. She got to work in ladies fashions. I got to work in their instore grocery. I was a little miffed to say the least.

First pay packet? What did you buy with it?
Blatantly exploiting my friends staff discount card for ladies fashions, I blew it on a top.

First cd you remember buying?
Nope, absolutely stumped on this one. I have no recollection of ever buying a CD, and certainly not a Now That's What I Call Music #3 and a 1/2. Not me.

First holiday abroad
I was a sweet innocent big brown eyed girl when we flew, yes on a plane, to Spain, age 3. Apparently I made friends with a lovely little french girl by the pool. We conversed in the language of all 3 year olds - Dolls. Then there was my first holiday abroad with friends which was to Ibiza, of course, aged 18. I returned with a lobster tan, no money and fond memories of Club 18-30.

What age were you when you moved out of your parents home?
I was a late starter in that regard, leaving home at 22 to move to London to further my career as a retail guru. Mum and dad were relieved.

And now I want you BlueBirdSunshine and you Older Single Mum to spill the beans on your firsts.

February Sunshine

I have been blessed with the gift of sunshine from the ever so sunny From Fun To Mum.
Isn't she a poppet? She must have known it has so far been a grey old month with only the occasional glimmer of anything shiny. And she is indeed shiny :)

To be worthy of this covetted award I have to reveal some of my favourites.

Favourite Colour: If you were to look through my wardrobe you would be forgiven for thinking it is grey but it is in fact purple, juicy plumy purple. Or orange. I am rather partial to orange too.

Favourite Animal: There is a dog reclining on my sofa, actually hogging my sofa, and as annoying and irritating and noisy as she can be, she is my favourite animal.

Favourite non-alcholic drink: What no alcohol? Okay then if I can't have alcohol then I will have caffeine! Either hot, milky and strong in the form of coffee or cold and fizzy in the form of diet coke.

Facebook or Twitter: I love the quick fix of twitter and the 140 characters or less stories that get told. Facebook has it's place but decreasingly so in my online life!

Favourite Number: Three. Because I have 3 children. Ahh! *bucket*

Favourite Day of the Week: Sundays for their lazy starts, big lunches and time together as a family. Ahh! *bucket (again)*

My Passion: It would be wrong to say Chocolate wouldn't it?

Getting or Giving Presents: Err hello?!? Getting obviously. Unless it is giving to your children because there is nothing quite like the look of excitment as they rip the paper. Ahh! *bucket (AGAIN)*

Favourite Pattern: Orla Kiely stem print. Fact.

Favourite Flower: Lavendar smells so lovely and is calming but for looks I love gerberas, daisies and tulips, bold colours and simple structure.

I believe I should be nominating some more worthy sunshiny people but do you know what? We all deserve some sunshine so help yourself. Loads to go round. No shoving at the back!

Happy Sunny February everyone x

Well Shuffle Me Sideways And Press Play!

I have been tagged by JBMumOfOne to tell you the first 5 tunes that are played on my iPod after hitting shuffle.

Stand by for the first disclaimer. I do not have an iPod but the Mr does so any tunes will be his taste, his collection, his music.
Stand by for the second disclaimer. I may or may not know how to shuffle my songs. All I ever do is press play. But the Big One is here and apparently knows what he is doing so here goes:

First up SWV and "Right Here". Actually a nice tune and one I will play again. But left me wondering what SWV stands for. Probably nothing interesting but if you do know, be a poppet and pop it in the comments :)

Next up: Disclaimer number 3: The Mr denies all knowledge of EVER downloading this. Busted and "Psycho Girl". Quite a cute song as it goes. And thank you Charlie for the cheque having reversed into our car (about 10 years ago).

Number 3 on 'my' iPod shuffle is Jack Johnson and "Bubble Toes". Lovely and mellow innit and such a cute title for a track. Must concentrate and listen to the lyrics to understand the reference.

Fourth up and we have Wyclef Jean and "911" ft Mary J Blige (which is important to mention I feel).

And finally, a classic that we can all appreciate, as long as you like The Beatles, "I want to hold your hand". Regrettably I am not a fan.

On the whole a respectable collection. I'm just glad that it stops there because I would not have been able to admit to the 6th song that came on!

How embarrassing are your songs when you hit shuffle?

So now I should nominate some more bloggers to go and shuffle. How about BibseyMama, Kate from the Five F's Blog, and Stressy Mummy.

Around the World in 80 Words

Clever old thing that SAHDandProud. He's only gone and thought up this brilliant meme where you describe somewhere in the world (that you have probably been to) in only 80 words.
I have travelled a bit, on holidays with suitcases where I come home after 3,7,10 or 14 nights, and once with a backpack for all of 21 days in Indonesia, which was nice but I missed hot showers and discovered a phobia of rats, cockroaches and lizards. I have even lived abroad, in Poland, which was cool, well very cool, in fact cold in the winter and surprisingly hot in the summer. But that's another blog post.

However, the place I want to talk about is where I seem to be most often at the moment, with the Wee One on my knee.

Fireman Sam and the Giant Toddler
Fireman Sam was going to need reinforcements!

Pontypandy

I find it astonishing that in a town with a population of thirteen (sixteen if you include pets), there are so many emergencies requiring the assistance of Fireman Sam. Pontypandy might have a pizzeria, the seaside, mountains and a forest but they all seem to present regular, if not daily hazards. But while there is a chance of being rescued by Tom and flying in his helicopter, I think it is a trip worth taking. PS Get health insurance.

Now pop over to SAHDandProud to add your travel guide to the ever growing list.

My Three Books

What three books would you rescue from a burning building?

Thank you to A Mummy Too who has set the challenge to list your 3 favourite books.

Actually what I'm trying to do is identify one book for each stage of my life. One from my childhood, one from adulthood and one from the grave. No not really although that would be interesting wouldn't it? What book would you want to be buried with in case you weren't really dead and needed something to read to pass the time? But then you would need one of those clever book light thingummies. And spare batteries, because you know they would run out.
Have I digressed?
Oh yes, the third literary category is parenthood, what is your favourite book to read to your child? Do your kids like the same book night after night after night to the point that you can recite it with your eyes closed and the any sense of feeling is eradicated through sheer boredom? Not just me then.
So the challenge is to choose just one book from childhood, adulthood and parenthood.

Childhood
My love of mysteries started early with The Secret Seven, Enid Blyton.

The Secret Seven, Enid Blyton

Every Christmas and birthday I would ask for a new Secret Seven book and I would devour it immediately, right up to the last few pages when I would realise that it would soon be finished and I would have to wait months for the next one and I would savour the last few minutes of pleasure. Sadly, Mum and Dad are not big on childhood mementos and the books have all gone so I am going to have to re-buy the collection to ensure that my children get to experience The Secret Seven.
After I had consumed all of the books in the Secret Seven Series, I must have progressed to another series of mysteries which (given old age) I can no longer remember, before I moved on to status books, you know, ones that were at least an inch thick and involved *ahem* romance, like Riders.

Adulthood
How is it possible to choose just one book? If I was to choose a classic, having studied English Literature, it would be a Jane Austin, with Pride and Prejudice being my favourite. But the truth is I am a sucker for a good thriller, a suspense, a mystery (see Childhood) so an Agatha Christie could be top of the list but don't ask me to choose just one of her iconic stories.
Racking my brains and scanning the 'library' shelves, there are some great books there that are worthy of the short list like Donna Tartt's "The Secret History", a page turner that has got me turning the pages a couple of times, Margaret Atwood's "The Blind Assassin" which I could not put down on one memorable holiday or Anne Rice's "The Witching Hour" is the only fantasy novel I have ever read that grabbed me from the start and wouldn't let me put it down.
But the one book that rises above them all is Tracy Chevalier's "Girl With A Pearl Earring".

Girl With A Pearl Earring, Tracy Chevalier

Much like I would be desperate to get the next Secret Seven mystery in my childhood, I pace the pavement outside the bookshop to get the new Tracey Chevalier novel. Her style is magical, simplistic and evocative, taking a slice of history and spinning a lace like web of a story around it that traps you and will not let you go until the final page is turned and you cannot help but let out a little sigh.

Parenthood
One classic that is right up there for me is "Peepo" by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Lovely illustrations that reveal new pleasures every time you read it, and one that I will keep for many years to come.
A more modern book is one a friend of mine bought for my eldest son for his 4th birthday. It is about poo so of course, is a great hit in our house. It is "The Mole Who Knew It Was None Of His Business" by Werner Holzwarth.

The Mole Who Knew It Was None Of His Business, Werner Holzwarth

Lovely illustrations, great animal characters and the best descriptions of animal poo you will ever read. I defy you to get bored of reading this to your children or for your children to stop giggling.

On that note I am off to colour co-ordinate my book collections.

What would your three books be?

Join in with A Mummy Too and have a gander at what other people class as their top three books.

Vintage Threads

I think of vintage and I think of designer vintage clothing like Chanel, Pucci or Givenchy, and I think of how much you can spend on what, once upon a time, you might have found buried in a charity shop somewhere in Chelsea. Then a whole industry was born out of vintage, and old cast offs were given a very lucrative new lease of life.

As much as I would have loved to have a Mother whose wardrobe I could plunder and launch my own vintage retro clothing collection from, there was an unfashionable side to the 70's that Mum comfortably resided in. Sorry Mum!

Subsequently I have no inherited vintage gems I can share. :(

So to my own purchases.

Ahem.

Right, well I have a couple of pairs of socks that... no probably not.

Digging a bit deeper and behold, my gym gear! Last worn circa 2002. Ten years ago. I could have properly scared myself and tried it on but that would be simply foolish. How to depress yourself in 1 easy step: try on too tight lycra.

I have this T-shirt that I think could be bordering on the vintage. Erasure Phantasmagorical Tour 1992.

Erasure Phantasamagorical Tour T-shirt

I was there, in Hammersmith, with my flatmate and his sister, singing along, loudly and loving every minute. I have no idea why I have kept the T-shirt. It is unflattering. It has seriously faded. It has no sentimental value. But it has been in my comfy clothing drawer (everyone has one of those, right?) for at least 10 years and gets an outing once a year when it gets so cold I need to wear long sleeves in bed. Whoo hoo!

I also have this coat which I love and sort of looks retro, in the dark and if you squint.

Fake fur coat

I bought it in Poland, where it's thick luscious fake fur was an absolute necessity and where, if you are anti real fur you can still blend right in with the Poles (at least you could in the late 90's. But I somehow think fashions have moved on significantly since then and if I was to go back and visit Warsaw, I would look like someone's ageing spinster aunt). That all said, I look like someone's overweight ageing spinster aunt if I wear it here too!

Thank you Melksham Mum who tagged me :) and Motherventing who started this Meme x

And now I tag From Fun To Mum, Stressy Mummy and HPMcQ.
Show us your vintage ladies! And apologies if you already have x

Saturday Is Caption Day

Tis Saturday and the bloggers are revolting. Well one is.

I blame JBMumOfOne and Tots100.

I stand corrected. I now blame Here Come The Girls!

Apparently* the Tots100 Christmas party was nothing short of a riot, and a few drinks may have been drunk, and few laughs may have been had, and a few shapes may have been thrown on the dancefloor. Over much hilarity JBMumOfOne bonded with Mammasaurus and thought it would be a double giggle to get us all thinking up captions for photos of Mamma herself. She knows nothing of this coup. Well not yet anyway. She may get wind of it when she looks at all the entries to #satcap and spots a common theme.

I would say join in but unless you are in possession of a pic of Queen Mammasaurus** you will be standing alone I suspect.

So this one was *ahem* made available to me for the purposes of caption making and joining the revolution.

Now toddle along to Mammasaurus.

*I was sadly not in attendance.
**I was given this photo of Mamma but no money changed hands.

Wot So Funee

I just had to tell you this one...

The Big One: Mummy, can I have an xbox?
Me: Well, Christmas is coming and you will have to see what Santa brings. *not an xbox*
The Big One: But I need one now.
Me: Christmas is not for another 4 weeks.
The Big One: But it's not a Christmas present. *Big Sigh* It's just an xbox.
Me: It's not just an xbox. They are expensive and they are definitely something that Santa brings. *I definitely should not have said 'definitely'*
The Big One: BUT IT'S NOT A SANTA PRESENT! We have them all the time.
Me: Eh?
The Big One: I just want to make a model turtle with it. Look.

Produces instructions to make a turtle using an...

Egg Box.

Note to self: Get my hearing checked.

My Blog Is Great. And Versatile!

The Versatile Blogger Award

Thanking you kindly, Bibsey and Here Come The Girls.

Not only is my blog great but it is also versatile.

According to the dictionary, the definition of versatile is to be capable of turning easily from one task to another. In the blink of an eye, I can hop from one crisis to another, I can juggle three children, I can see through walls (if small children are on the other side) and I can rustle up dinner using only a tin of tuna and a cream cracker (that last example may be an exaggeration but if anyone does have a recipe I would be grateful).

The responsibility of such an auspicious award is to reveal a few more tasty tidbits about myself and (much like the reigning Miss World who hands her crown on to her successor) present the award to a further collection of deserved bloggers.

I've decided to follow a theme on this one and reveal seven things about myself related to versatility.

  1. I am not only numerate but also creative (left and right brained).
  2. I have 7 uses for a muslin cloth:
    1. Burp cloth
    2. Sun hat (for child or adult!)
    3. An emergency nappy
    4. A blanket for cooler summer breezes
    5. A bib
    6. A nap sack for running away with
    7. Bandanna
  3. I will write about anything (sports nutrition to muslin cloths).
  4. I am happy with either milk or dark chocolate.
  5. I can find 1001 ways to fill an afternoon if I am trying to avoid doing something else.
  6. I am happily entertained by any number of different reality TV shows.
  7. I am a very versatile guest: black tie, formal, smart casual, cocktails, dinner or dancing. Just need a few invitations.

So my versatile bloggers, over to you:

My Blog Is Great

No. Really. It is.
Motherventing says so. And you wouldn't want to disagree with her. She rashly promised to give up biscuits this month and she is in withdrawal, so tread carefully.

Apparently I get an award that says so too. I will polish it daily and display it in my Trophy Cupboard.
However, there is a small catch. A condition of acceptance of this award is that I must reveal 7 secret things about myself for you all to wonder at.

Secret 1. I know how cranes are erected. Like this.

Secret 2. I was a massive Secret Seven fan in my youth. Hah! 7 secrets, Secret Seven. Brilliant.

Secret 3. I am a lover of retro confectionery. Ferrero Rocher, Matchmakers, Star Bars, Toffifee, and Texan Bars. In another life I would have a sweet shop filled with sweets from my childhood. I would never leave. Primarily because I would be too fat to fit through the door ;)

Secret 4. I cannot get drunk. Or more accurately I can get drunk but it is guaranteed to be a messy affair involving dettol.

Secret 5. I am a highly intelligent person who fools everyone on an hourly basis into thinking I am a flaky stay at home mum.

Secret 6. I am so intelligent and in tune with retail promotional strategy that I will not be starting my Christmas shopping until 5 days before the 25th with the exception of...

Secret 7. ...the Christmas Advent Calendars which are hidden in the cupboard under the stairs (but don't tell anyone).

Now the lovely bit where I get to pass the love on to more deserving bloggers, 15 of them. Crikey. (Actually kind of hard to find 15 bloggers who haven't been awarded already!)

More than a mum
Brink of Bedlam
The Kitchen Mechanic
Cheetahs in my Shoes
Mummy is a Gadget Geek
Mummy Barrow
Cats Yellow Days

Okay, I give up. Seven winners of the Seven Secrets award. That works right?

Tally ho!

And thank you to The Princess and The Pickle who also thought I deserved this award. Does that mean mine can be twice as big as everyone elses?

Lazybloggeritis

Wordle: meme

I think I may be suffering from a contagious lurgy. Symptoms include brain ache, sloppy writing, lack of inspiration, seeing blog badges before my eyes, and a strong sense of deja vu. I think I may be a lazy blogger.

You see doctor, there are just so many great linkys, blog hops and memes out there that I could sometimes post more than once a day just joining in with everyone elses's great ideas. And in a month where so many of us are partaking in NaBloPoMo this is clearly very helpful and frankly much needed. (Brain ache!)

But (there is always a but isn't there, and this is where I get to the point, I think, hopefully) am I a lazy blogger if I join in with too many blog hops? And, important this bit, how many is too many? Granted, many of them are blog hops where you link in your own original post, as long as it ties in with the theme, so there is the prerequisite that you have written something in the first place. So that isn't lazy is it? Or does using a prompt from someone else class you as lazy too? Oh hell!

I guess there are echoes in this post of the balance between reviews and interesting unique writing from the author. I know that debate has been aired recently and I am firmly in the camp of, if the review is relevant to me I will read it, if not I will click away, hopefully not stumbling upon another blog reviewing the exact same thing in the process.

At this point in the proceedings, I should add that this post comes only 2 days after I started my own blog hop. (Hypocrite!). It's called Snap Slappers and all you have to do is... SORRY!

So what's a blogger to do?

On reflection, having given it considerable consideration, I've thought long and hard and I have reached a decision. I have to be true to my heart. Oh, Dermot this is really difficult.

I am going to continue with the linkys and blog hops that I do.
I will join in if I have a relevant post to link with.
I will ensure that I am giving good blog through original and thought provoking posts (That'll be a first).
I will continue to waste many hours to photo editing ;) to ensure that I have beautiful/hilarious/witty images to accompany my words of wisdom.

As for the stats, well that's another whole conversation.

Blog on my friends. Blog on!

By the way, if you have a meme and you would like to send it my way. Please do! I have some serious gaps in my blogging calendar for the rest of NaBloPoMo! Just don't call me lazy!

Dear So and So - The Being Brave Edition

Dear Papworth Hospital,

I've heard great things about you. If you could just keep that reputation up for the next few weeks, that would be fabulous.

Yours, a rather nervous patient's daughter.

-----------------------------------------

Dear Surgeon,

Please get an early night. Please eat a healthy, slow energy release, cereal-based breakfast. Please don't be distracted by what might be on TV later, the new Boden catalogue or whether your cat is pregnant. Please focus. Please concentrate. Please. Thanks.

Yours, the daughter of the woman you are operating on this Tuesday.

-----------------------------------------

Dear Mum's Heart,

I know this probably all looks a bit scary from where you're sitting (and frankly from where I am too) but this is seriously going to make everything a whole lot easier. I know it feels like you are trying to suck an extra thick McD's milkshake up a very thin straw. Well soon your straw will be a nice big thick one.

Yours, an expert on McD's milkshakes.

Dear Mum,

Do what the doctors tell you. I know you wont want to get out of bed and climb those daft pretend stairs that lead to, er, well, nowhere, but do it. Don't use the excuse that you live in a bungalow and wont need to climb stairs, there are stairs in the outside world. It will be worth it.

Yours, your bossy stubborn daughter.

Dear Dad,

She's gonna be fine.

Love you. x

Saturday Is Caption Day!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to think of a caption for this photo and then leave a comment demonstrating your superior sense of humour. Simple huh?

Thank you Mammasaurus x
